One of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world, Ephesus features remarkably preserved Roman streets, sacred temples, and monumental theatres. Escape the city for a day and explore the chic towns, charming villages and tranquil countryside retreats within easy reach of Izmir. Along the coast, Çeşme and Kuşadası stand out as lively beach resorts, known for their golden sands, upbeat atmosphere and vibrant mix of restaurants, shopping and nightlife. Nearby, Alaçatı offers a more refined and picturesque setting, with cobbled streets, stone houses and bougainvillea-draped cafés. Its steady winds and shallow lagoon have helped establish it as one of the world’s leading windsurfing destinations, so there is definitely a laid-back, surfer vibe to the place. For something quieter, Urla has emerged as one of the region’s leading food destinations, celebrated for its farm-to-table dining, boutique wineries and laid-back seaside meze restaurants.

For a change of pace, head inland to Şirince, a picturesque hillside village above Selçuk. Perched high above Izmir on Mount Pagos, Kadifekale (meaning “Velvet Castle”) is an historic hilltop fortress offering a sweeping vista over the city and the Aegean coast. Originally built in the 4th – 3rd century BC, the castle played a key role in the founding of ancient Smyrna, the precursor to modern Izmir. Steeped in legend, the site is said to have been chosen after Alexander the Great claimed a goddess told him in a dream to establish a city there. Over time, Kadifekale was expanded and used by Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman civilisations, each leaving their mark on its walls and structures. Nowadays, you can explore the remains of the ancient fortifications, towers and vaulted cisterns while enjoying some of the best views of Izmir.

Step back in time with a visit to Pergamon, capital of the Attalid Kingdom from 281 BC to 133 BC. Located in the north and west of the modern town of Bergama, the ruins are all that remain of a once powerful cultural and intellectual centre of the ancient world. When wandering through its impressive hilltop Acropolis, you’ll find majestic temples, the remains of the Temple of Trajan with its towering columns, a dramatic hillside theatre (one of the steepest in the ancient world) and sweeping panoramic views across the valley. Pergamon is particularly renowned for its library, second only to the one in Alexandria, as well as its advanced medical centre, the Asklepion, with its sacred tunnels, courtyards and ancient healing rooms.

The diverse coastline of Çeşme is just an hour away by car from Izmir. The beaches there boast their own unique character so whether you’re looking for natural thermal waters, golden sands or ideal wind‑surfing conditions, you’re sure to find the perfect place for you.

Ilıca Beach is the area’s most famous shoreline, known for its shallow, crystal-clear waters and natural thermal springs that mix with the sea. These create warm, mineral-rich patches of water that feel like a natural spa. It’s ideal for families and relaxed swimming.

Every beach claims to have a pristine shoreline but Altınkum Beach stands out as its name literally means “Golden Sand”. With incredibly clear water and a calmer, more peaceful atmosphere, it’s perfect for unwinding away from busier tourist areas. Alternatively, Pırlanta (“Diamond”) Beach offers a more open, natural setting with steady coastal winds, ideal conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. It’s a great choice if you are keen to try something more adventurous on the water.
