Valletta is one of Europe’s smallest yet most captivating capital cities. Perched on a peninsula overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with history, culture and breathtaking views at every turn.

At the centre of the city’s rich heritage is St. John’s Co-Cathedral, famous for its ornate Baroque interior and masterpieces by Caravaggio. Beyond its impressive architecture, Valletta’s narrow streets are lined with charming cafés, boutique shops and grand buildings that tell the story of Malta’s past. The city’s Grand Harbour is equally impressive, offering panoramic towards the historic Three Cities (Birgu, Senglea, Cospicua) across the bay. A stroll through the Upper Barrakka Gardens is the perfect way to take it all in especially at sunset when the harbour glows in golden light.

The Republic of Malta isn’t just one island: it’s an archipelago made up of three main islands – Malta, Gozo and Comino – together with some much smaller islets. One of the best ways to explore beyond the main island is by taking one of the regular ferries and boat trips that run throughout the day, making island hopping easy and convenient.

A visit to Comino is a must for beach lovers, home to the famous Blue Lagoon, where clear turquoise waters and the white sandy seabed create one of the most stunning swimming spots in the Mediterranean. It’s perfect for a day of relaxing, snorkelling or simply soaking up the sunshine during your Malta holiday.

For a change of pace, head to Gozo, Malta’s quieter and greener sister island. At its heart lies Victoria, the island’s capital, where you can explore the impressive Citadel and enjoy panoramic views across the countryside. Gozo is ideal for those looking to experience traditional Maltese life, scenic landscapes and a more laid-back atmosphere.

The ancient walled city of Mdina, is often referred to as the “Silent City” due to its peaceful, traffic-free streets. Perched on a hill in the centre of the island, Mdina offers visitors a glimpse into the past with its beautifully preserved medieval architecture and narrow alleyways. You will find elegant palaces, hidden courtyards and historic landmarks at every turn. Highlights include St. Paul’s Cathedral, with its impressive Baroque design, and the city’s fortified walls, which provide some of the most spectacular panoramic views in Malta. Unlike the busier coastal resorts, Mdina offers a calm and atmospheric experience, especially in the early morning or evening when the streets are at their quietest.

Dingli Cliffs are one of the island’s most breathtaking natural landmarks, stretching majestically along the island’s western coast. The highest point on the island, these dramatic cliffs offer sweeping views over the Mediterranean Sea. And on clear days, you can even spot the small, uninhabited island of Filfla in the distance.

Far from the bustling resorts, Dingli Cliffs are perfect for walking, taking photos or simply soaking up the scenery. Head to St. Mary Magdalene Chapel, one of the most iconic spots along the cliffs, to enjoy the stunning panoramic views and peaceful surroundings. The western-facing cliff edges are some of the best places in Malta linger in the evening, as the setting sun bathes the cliffs and sea in soft, golden light.

Step back thousands of years and discover Malta’s remarkable prehistoric heritage, where some of the world’s oldest surviving structures await. Scattered across the islands are ancient sites that reveal a civilisation long before the Greeks and Romans conquered the island.

One of the most extraordinary is the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, a unique underground complex carved entirely out of rock. This prehistoric burial site dates back over 5,000 years and consists of chambers, corridors and halls spread across multiple levels beneath the ground. It’s a truly atmospheric experience, but visits are strictly limited so booking well in advance is essential.

Over on the island of Gozo, you’ll find the impressive Ġgantija Temples, among the oldest free-standing structures in the world, even older than the Egyptian pyramids. Built using massive limestone blocks, these temples are believed to have been used for religious rituals, and their scale and craftsmanship continue to amaze visitors today.

Some of Malta’s best beaches can be found along the island’s northern and western coasts. Spend a classic beach day on Golden Bay with its soft sand, clear waters and stunning surroundings. Nearby, Mellieħa Bay (Għadira Bay) is the island’s largest sandy beach and its shallow waters make it ideal for Link-families. For something a little more tucked away, Paradise Bay offers a smaller, scenic setting framed by cliffs and turquoise seas.

Beyond the beaches, Malta’s coastline is full of natural wonders. The Blue Grotto, a series of sea caves on the south coast, is famous for its vivid blue waters and shimmering reflections. For a truly memorable experience, explore the caverns on a boat excursion from the nearby harbour of Wied iż-Żurrieq. Then head to the charming fishing villages of Marsaskala and Marsaxlokk. Both offer relaxed waterfronts lined with restaurants, while Marsaxlokk is especially known for its colourful traditional boats and fresh seafood.

Malta is a relatively quick and easy flight from the UK, close enough for an easy trip but far enough to enjoy guaranteed sunshine. Direct flight time is usually around 3 to 4 hours, depending on your departure airport. Flights arrive at Malta International Airport (MLA), the island’s main gateway, located just a short transfer from Valletta and the main resorts.

For UK passport holders, Malta is part of the Schengen Area, meaning the 90 days in 180 rule applies and visitors will need to register with the EU Entry/Exit System (EES).

The best time to visit Malta depends entirely on your travel goals, but the overall best windows are the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November). During these months, you will experience the ideal balance of warm weather, lower prices, and fewer crowds.

In April and May, the three islands are exceptionally green, wildflowers bloom and temperatures rest comfortably between 15°C and 25°C. This weather is perfect for walking through Valletta or exploring Comino or Gozo without suffering from intense heat.

During the peak summer season, of July and August, temperatures regularly soar past 32°C and can hit the low 40s during dry African heatwaves. It is perfect if you love vibrant nightlife, water sports, and village fireworks festivals (festas). But if you want swim comfortably without navigating suffocating summer crowds, aim for early June or anytime in September.

Malta is part of the Eurozone, and while credit and debit cards are widely accepted, cash is still useful for smaller cafés, local transport and markets.

- Do leave a small tip
Tipping isn’t mandatory but leaving around 5–10% in restaurants is appreciated for good service.

- Do explore beyond the main resorts
Some of Malta’s best experiences are in quieter spots like Mdina, Gozo or along the coast in villages such as Sliema, Mellieħa, Bugibba or Qawra.


- Don’t disrespect local traditions
Even though Malta has a buzzing nightlife, especially in places like St Julian’s, it remains a country with strong religious roots. Be sure to dress modestly when visiting churches and religious sites and show respect for local customs.

- Don’t underestimate the sun
Malta gets very hot, especially in summer, so sunscreen, water and a hat are essential wherever you go.

- Don’t rely only on public transport at busy times
Buses can get crowded, especially during peak season, so it’s worth allowing extra time for journeys. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are widely available and reasonably priced, making them a convenient alternative.
